Olympic lifting is awesome. It just is. It’s super technical and a real challenge but that’s all part of it, and when you nail a sweet sweet clean and jerk or snatch for the first time it really does feel special. I coach a number of weightlifters mainly at my bingley gym and also at Leeds University, as I am the head coach of the Powerlifting and Weightlifting Society.
But these aren’t the only people I coach weightlifting too. The olympic lifts when used correctly are a great tool for sports performance strength and conditioning, and are applicable to pretty much any sport. If you have to run, jump or accelerate in your sport then the oly lifts will benefit you!
It’s not as easy as just adding them to your program though. Learning the clean and jerk and the snatch is infinitely more of a challenge than any other lift you will perform in the gym. For example when I coach the clean I break it down into 6 seperate components, all of which need to be performed perfectly in series, with some real explosive movement. It’s so easy to pick up bad habits you really need to have a coach in order to learn how to do them well!
